1. 4 Part Series - Tips for a Writing
a Winning Resume
===================================================
In week two of our
4 part series on creating the winning
resume you have been looking for we cover proper
reference
selection.
------------------------------------------------------------
As you probably
already know, one of the important
components to any successful job search is whom you select
as references. These references can change your candidacy
from being a good to an excellent candidate...or it may take
you out of the running. Before naming individuals as
references, it makes good sense to discuss it with them to
make sure they are comfortable providing a great reference,
not just a mediocre reference. It also guarantees that they
will be fully prepared if a potential employer calls to ask
about your work ethic and abilities. Choose your references
carefully. Select individuals who have known you for a
significant period of time (at least a year or more) and are
familiar with your skills, abilities, and significant
accomplishments, especially as they apply to the position
you are applying for. Previous colleagues, supervisors, and
clients make good references. If they aren't comfortable
about providing a great reference, that is okay, as least
they let you know and you can spend time locating a better
source. Once you have located all your references keep in
touch, let them know how your search is going. It is also
important to thank your references for their help.
